Dito isto;

A verdade simples é.

A estratégia usa apenas alguns indicadores:

Oscilador Estocástico (multi-time frame) Suporte e resistência Retracements Fibonacci.

Configuração # 1 no gráfico.

Filtro do oscilador do acelerador.

É importante considerar notícias fundamentais no mercado.

(Setas laranja)

e novamente seguiu a tendência.

No final!

Agora, eu lhe dei as ferramentas, então, comece a operar lucrativamente!

Compre próximo quando o RSI acumulado (2) for inferior a 5.

Below is a chart of what this system would look like along with the system results.

RSI(2) System Results.

Percent Winners: 67%

These results are great considering we have such a simple system. This demonstrates the power the RSI(2) indicator has had now for well over a decade. Just with this concept alone you can develop several trading systems. For now, let’s see if we can we improve upon these results.

Accumulated RSI(2) Strategy.

Larry Conners adds a slight twist to the RSI(2) trading model by creating an accumulated RSI value. Instead of a single calculation we will be computing a running daily total of the 2-period RSI. In this case, we are going to use the total of the 2-period RSI for the past three days. When you keep an accumulated value of the RSI(2) you smooth out the values. Below is a chart comparing the standard 2-period RSI indicator with an accumulated 2-period RSI indicator. You can see how much smoother our new indicator is. This is done to reduce the number of trades in hopes of capturing the quality trades. In short, it’s an attempt to improve the efficiency of our original trading model.

Accumulated RSI in top pane. Standard RSI in lower pane.

Price must be above its 200-day moving average. Buy on close when cumulative RSI(2) of the past three days is below 45. Exit when RSI(2) of the close of current day is above 65. Use a $1000 catastrophic stop loss.

Accumulated RSI(2) System Results.

Percent Winners: 67%

S&P Cash Market.

What would the 2-period RSI system look like trading 100 shares of the S&P cash market going back to 1993? It does rather well.

Conclusions.

So which one is better? The accumulated strategy worked as intended. It increased the efficiency of the standard RSI(2) trading model by reducing the number of trades, yet produced about the same amount of net profit. As a bonus, the drawdown was slightly smaller. While both systems do a fantastic job, the accumulation strategy may do a slightly better job. The Accumulated RSI(2) strategy will work well on the mini Dow as well as the two ETFs, DIA and SPY.

The EasyLanguage code is available below as a free download. There is also a TradeStation workspace. Please note, the trading concept and the code as provided is not a complete trading system. It is simply a demonstration of a robust entry method that can be used as a core of a trading system. So, for those of you who are interested in building your own trading systems this concept may be a great starting point.

After reading your article it left me wondering how $1000 stop-loss ensured when buying at closing price?

No stop is ever ensured. This is part of the risk of holding trades when the market is closed.

That means that your simulated returns are incorrect and the system is not profitable at all.

Can you explain why the simulated returns are not correct and what the true simulated results are based on your runs?

Because one can’t control the gap between closing and opening price the simulation you offered might not be profitable at all. Please run the simulation at opening price instead of closing price.

If the price gaps below our stop we will be taken out at a loss larger than our stop. Removing the stop produces “better” results. I’ve also been trading a similar system which drills down to the 5-minute chart. I assure you, it’s profitable. I encourage you to test the concept on your own platform. Obrigado!

Or $1000 stop-loss condition needs to be removed when running at closing price.

For those using TC2000 or Telechart, this is from Bruce at worden regarding accum RSI(2):

This is very simple if you want the running total of a non-Wilder’s Smoothed RSI:

Have you testing for 15 minutes and why you go out at 65.

I’ve not testing a 15-minute time frame. The exit at 65 is not an optimized number – I just picked what I thought was reasonable. Of course you are free to test and modify the parameter to your liking.

Hi Jeff, I’m a novice trader and i’m wondering how can we actually “Buy on close when cumulative RSI(2) is below 5.” as stated for the rules in RSI(2)??

Since we cannot predict today’s closing price, does it mean buying tomorrow’s stock at today’s closing price?

Good question. If you trade futures, things are a bit easier. I mainly trade futures and placing orders at the end of the day is simple. The market closes, your computer program calculates the results and places the order. Because the futures markets are open after the daily session ends, your order is filled. For stocks within TradeStation, you could simply have your system calculate the results of the RSI(2) 5-minutes before the close of the market. This can be done via programming or adjusting your session times on your trading platform. Your order is place before the close and your order is filled near the end-of-day price. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for the reply. This definitely helps a lot!

Jeff, thanks so much for posting this. Love your blog.

Re this system, I see that the eld is Long only. Have you tested this going short as well over 90?

Hello JB. Sorry for the long delay in getting back with you. I overlooked your comment. I have done some testing with going short and it was not very productive. However it might be worth looking into again, as it’s been many years. Thanks for the idea for a future article!

Testing The RSI 2 Trading Strategy On US Stocks.

Share this post:

In this article I look at a popular method for trading stocks and futures which utilises the RSI 2 indicator. This is a mean reversion technique for finding overbought and oversold securities.

What is the RSI indicator?

The RSI (relative strength index) is an overbought/oversold momentum oscillator first developed by J. Welles Wilder in 1978. It’s a very popular indicator measuring relative strength in a security and is most often used on a 14-day timeframe, with values ranging from 0 to 100.

Typically, when RSI 14 is below 30, the security can be said to be oversold and this is meant to be a good time to buy. When RSI 14 is above 70, the security is said to be overbought and this is meant to be a good time to sell.

However, I tested the RSI 14 indicator on a number of different stocks and I found that these rules have not been all that successful over the last few years.

In fact, I found that doing the exact opposite (buying overbought stocks and selling oversold stocks) results in higher returns as it allows the capture of longer term upward trends. You can read the full article testing the RSI 14 here.

Since RSI 14 is not so conducive to short-term mean reversion type trades, the rest of this article will look at testing the indicator on a two-day timeframe instead. Whereas, the RSI 14 can be implemented in a trend following system, RSI 2 is a lot more volatile and more suited to shorter term trading.

Testing The RSI 2 Trading Strategy.

I believe the RSI 2 trading strategy was first popularised by Larry Connors and Cesar Alvarez in the book Short-Term Trading Strategies That Work, published in November 2008.

In the book, Connors agrees that the 14-period RSI has no edge statistically and that he is much more successful with RSI 2. The book says that Connors looked at over eight million trades from January 1 1995 to December 31 2007 and found that “the average returns of stocks with a 2-period RSI reading below 10 outperformed the benchmark 1-day (+0.07%), 2-days (+0.21%), and 1-week later (+0.49%).”

Furthermore, Connors and Alvarez found that the lower the RSI 2, the greater the subsequent performance.

The book then goes on to list some specific trading strategies to take advantage of these findings. These strategies will now be tested on more up-to-date data with the back-testing simulator, Amibroker.

Test One – 2-period RSI under 5 on S&P 500.

The first strategy mentioned in the book is on the S&P 500 Index. It has the following rules:

The S&P 500 is above its 200-day MA RSI 2 of the S&P 500 is below 5 Buy the S&P 500 on the close Exit when the S&P 500 closes above its 5-day MA.

In other words, we want to buy the S&P 500 when it is oversold but still above it’s 200-day moving average. This strategy is run between 1995 and 2008 and is shown in the book to produce the following returns:

• No. of trades = 49.

• No. of Winners = 83.6%

• Total points made = 522.92.

• Average hold time = 3 days.

I tested this strategy for myself using Amibroker and historical data from Norgate between 1/1/1995 and 1/1/2008 (without any transaction costs) and I achieved the following results:

• No. of trades = 49.

• No. of winners = 83.7%

• Total points made = 524.4.

• Average hold time = 4 days.

• Annualised return = 3.91%

• Maximum drawdown = -6.48%

As you can see, the results are almost identical. Following is the table of results by month and year:

Since the test results look good so far I moved the data set forward and tested the strategy between 1/1/2008 and 1/1/2016. The results are shown below:

• No. of trades = 30.

• No. of Winners = 80%

• Total points made = 184.91.

• Average hold time = 4 days.

• Annualised return = 1.35%

• Maximum drawdown = -13.19%

As you can see, although the strategy has still been profitable performance has declined somewhat and this is clearly seen by the CAR/MDD ratio.

The results table below shows how the system did poorly in 2011, 2013 and 2014. However, performance did come back strongly in 2015. As a result, it is hard to say whether the strategy is broken or not.

Test Two – Cumulative RSI on SPY.

In the second test, Connors comes up with a strategy which uses a cumulative RSI. This strategy is tested on the SPY ETF and has the following rules:

Security is above its 200-day MA Use 2-period RSI Add up past two days of the 2-period RSI Buy if the cumulative RSI is below 35 Exit when the 2-period RSI closes above 65.

Running this system on SPY between mid-January 1993 and 1/1/2008 is shown in the book to produce the following results:

• No. of trades = 50.

• No. of Winners = 88%

• Total points made = 65.53.

• Average hold time = 3.7 days.

I ran the same system in Amibroker on the SPY ETF and got the following results:

• No. of trades = 127.

• No. of Winners = 74%

• Total points made = 42.56.

• Average hold time = 3.5 days.

• Maximum drawdown = -7.25%

Clearly my results are quite a bit different. I’m not sure why that is. Maybe I am not testing the right market. Maybe my rules are not the same. It’s hard to tell given the information in the book.

Nevertheless, let’s run the strategy and see how its performed in more recent years. Thus, running the same strategy on SPY between 1/1/2008 and 1/1/2016 I achieved the following results:

• No. of trades = 58.

• No. of Winners = 72.4%

• Total points made = 20.36.

• Average hold time = 4 days.

• Annualised return = 1.76%

• Maximum drawdown = -19.38%

Once again, you san see that the strategy has not performed so well in recent years. Although the percentage of winners has only declined slightly, the drawdown has more than doubled. If we look at the profit table, we can see that the system has actually done quite well every year except in 2011 where it lost 11.5%.

Test Three – Cumulative RSI On Stocks.

According to Connors, stocks have added risk versus indices because they can go to zero (whereas indices can’t). Connors therefore suggests it’s important to use much lower cumulative RSI readings on individual stocks.

In Stock Trading Strategies That Work, Connors looks at all stocks with cumulative RSI readings below 10 with an average daily volume of more than 250,000 shares and a stock price above $5.

He concludes that there were 77,068 signals between 1995 and 2008, “of which 69% of trades were profitable exiting above a 2-period RSI of 65” and that “the average gain on these stocks was nearly four times greater than the gains for all stocks with the same holding period.”

In order to test this final approach I came up with the following portfolio strategy rules:

Stock has 100 day average volume above 250,000 shares Stock trades above $5 Stock is above its 200-day MA Buy if the cumulative RSI 2 is below 10 Exit when the 2-period RSI closes above 65 Maximum portfolio size of 10 stocks at one time Equity is split equally between each position Duplicate signals are ranked by RSI 2; weakest preferred.

I ran the strategy on all stocks in the S&P 1500 universe between the dates 1/1/1995 and 1/1/2016. This time I included commissions of $0.01 per share and all trades were made on the close. The results and equity curve from this strategy are shown below:

• No. of trades = 8711.

• No. of Winners = 64.7%

• Average hold time = 5.2 days.

• Annualised return = 23.86%

• Maximum drawdown = -21.36%

As you can see from these results, the strategy has put in a very good performance over the last 20 years, turning a hypothetical starting capital of $100,000 into almost $9 million with an overall annualised return of 23.86%.

So, the RSI 2 trading strategy really has been a great way to get on board some oversold stocks and make some profitable mean reversion trades!

However, although these results do look good on paper it’s also important to be aware of some additional considerations.

Additional Considerations.

The most glaring consideration is shown from looking at the yearly profit table (above) and this shows that the strongest performance actually came at the beginning of the test period. For example, on the S&P 1500 universe, the strategy made over 80% in 1997, 1999 and 2000. In recent years the strategy has performed nowhere near as well.

This is also consistent when running the strategy on the S&P 500 and S&P 100 universe as you can see below:

Monthly and yearly results on the S&P 100 universe.

Monthly and yearly results on the S&P 500 universe.

It’s worth noting that the strategy still seems to be profitable with very few down years. Maybe an edge still exists but performance does seem to have tailed off.

It’s also important to consider that this strategy entails trading precisely on the close. Since you won’t know the real RSI closing value until the day is over, you will likely need some method of pre-calculating the trade price which will give you the correct closing signal. This may prove difficult.

Also, the short-term nature of the system means that slippage estimates may vary.

Overall Thoughts.

The performance of the RSI 2 indicator strategy seems to have lost some of its edge in recent years. This may be because markets have become more efficient, because the strategy has become more widely known, or a combination of the two.

The strategy is also difficult to implement especially when dealing with a large universe of stocks.

Having said that, the RSI 2 trading strategy still appears to be profitable and there have been no down years yet recorded on the S&P 500 universe.

Overall, the RSI 2 indicator still shows some promise for development and could be used with other rules and on other markets (such as on the VIX or fundamental data sources).

The idea of a cumulative indicator is also one that could be transferred to other indicators/strategies. So long as you can accurately forecast the closing RSI values, it may still be possible to make money from this strategy, or from a variation of it.

Interesting results and most definitely food for thought. I could see this might be good overlaid on the Vix or even on a shorter timeframe.

January 22, 2016.

Agreed, might be interesting to see how it goes on a 30-minute or 1-hour chart.

January 24, 2016.

Interesting result for the 100 stocks. Do you need this statement:

SetPositionSize( 1, spsShares )

Also, do you need this one?

January 25, 2016.

You don’t need SetPositionSize( 1, spsShares ) in this example but I have left it is because it is part of my usual template.

PositionScore is the ranking method so if there is more than one signal we will choose the stock with the lowest RSI 2.

January 26, 2016.

better than normal 14 day RSI but still quite raw…..needs much more fine tuning.

January 26, 2016.

Perhaps. How do you suggest to fine tune it?

January 25, 2017.

The strategy is good over a time as we can see on Portfolio Equity graph. The table shows the return on increased capital, not the initial, this is why it is lower and lower. If we use for example PositionSize = -20; in Amibroker, we will see yearly results without the influence on capital level.

Yes, that is a good point. I’ve been meaning to update this article.

Is the stock universe complete or is there survivorship bias in the results?

Can’t remember now to be honest but it probably did include delisted stocks. All my tests nowadays do include these companies to eliminate survivor bias.

3 profitable trading strategies.

People who succeed at day trading do three things very well:

They identify day trading strategies that are tried, tested.

They are 100% disciplined in executing those strategies.

They stick to a strict money management regime.

All you need to do is set aside a few minutes of your day to tackle one of the following day trading strategies which I outline for you below.

I will show you everything you need to know including.

Awesome day trading strategies that are used successfully every day. The main chart patterns associated with these day trading strategies. Instructions for implementing the strategies.

Day Trading Strategies we covered in this article are:

Then I will tell you,

The simple truth is.

Learning to use and implement a basic day trading strategies can cut your losses by 63% immediately and will increase your profitability chances in the long run.

So lets get down to business!

1: The Moving average crossover strategy.

Moving average indicators are standard within all trading platforms, the indicators can be set to the criteria that you prefer.

For this simple day trading strategy we need three moving average lines, One set at 20 periods, the next set at 60 periods and the last set at 100 periods. The 20 period line is our fast moving average, the 60 period is our slow moving average and the 100 period line is the trend indicator.

How do I trade with it?

This day trading strategy generates a BUY signal when the fast moving average ( or MA) crosses up over the slower moving average. And a SELL signal is generated when the fast moving average crosses below the slow MA. So you open a position when the MA lines cross in a one direction and you close the position when they cross back the opposite way.

How do you know if the price is beginning to trend? Well, If the price bars stay consistently above or below the 100 period line then you know a strong price trend is in force and the trade should be left to run.

The settings above can be altered to shorter periods but it will generate more false signals and may be more of a hindrance than a help. The settings I suggested will generate signals that will allow you to follow a trend if one begins without short price fluctuations violating the signal.

On the chart above I have circled in green four separate signals that this moving average crossover system has generated on the EURUSD daily chart over the last six months.

On each of those occasions the system made 600, 200, 200 and 100 points respectively.

I have also shown in red where this trading technique has generated false signals, these periods where price is ranging rather than trending are when a signal will most likely turn out to be false.

The first false signal in the above example broke even, the next example lost 35 points.

The above chart shows the first positive signal in detail, the fast MA crossed quickly down over the slow MA and the trend MA, generating the signal.

Notice how the price moved quickly away from the trend MA and stayed below it signifying a strong trend.

The second false signal is shown above in detail, the signal was generated when the fast MA moved above the slow MA, only to reverse quickly and signal to close the position.

Although the system is not correct all the time, the above example was correct 6/12 or 50% of the time.

BUT. We can immediately see how much more controlled and decisive trading becomes when a trading technique is used. There are no wild emotional rationalizations, every trade is based on a calculated reason.

2.Heikin-Ashi Trading Strategy.

Heikin-Ashi chart looks like the candlestick chart but the method of calculation and plotting of the candles on the Heikin-Ashi chart is different from the candlestick chart.

In candlestick charts, each candlestick shows four different numbers: Open, Close, High and Low price. Heikin-Ashi candles are different and each candle is calculated and plotted using some information from the previous candle:

1- Close price: Heikin-Ashi candle is the average of open, close, high and low price.

2- Open price: Heikin-Ashi candle is the average of the open and close of the previous candle.

3- High price: the high price in a Heikin-Ashi candle is chosen from one of the high, open and close price of which has the highest value.

4- Low price: the high price in a Heikin-Ashi candle is chosen from one of the high, open and close price of which has the lowest value.

Heikin-Ashi candles are related to each other because the close and open price of each candle should be calculated using the previous candle close and open price and also the high and low price of each candle is affected by the previous candle.

Heikin-Ashi chart is slower than a candlestick chart and its signals are delayed (like when we use moving averages on our chart and trade according to them). This could be an advantage in many cases of volatile price action. This day trading strategy is very popular among traders for that particular reason. It’s also very easy to recognise as trader needs to wait for the daily candle to close. Once new candle is populated, the previous one doesn’t re-paint.

You can access Heikin-Ashi indicator on every charting tool these days.

Lets see how a Heikin-Ashi chart looks like:

How do I trade with it?

On the chart above; bullish candles are marked in green and bearish candles are marked in red.

The very simple strategy using Heikin-Ashi proven to be very powerful in back test and live trading.

The strategy combines Heikin-Ashi reversal pattern with one of the popular momentum indicators. My favourite would be a simple Stochastic Oscillator with settings (14,7,3). The reversal pattern is valid if two of the candles (bearish or bullish) are fully completed on daily charts as per GBPJPY screenshot below.

Once the price prints two red consecutive candles after a series of green candles, the uptrend is exhausted and the reversal is likely. SHORT positions should be considered.

If the price prints two consecutive green candles, after a series of red candles, the downtrend is exhausted and the reversal is likely. LONG positions should be considered.

The raw candle formation is not enough to make this day trading strategy valuable. Trader needs other filters to weed out false signals and improve the performance.

MOMENTUM FILTER (Stochastic Oscillator 14,7,3)

We recommend to use a simple Stochastic Oscillator with settings 14,7,3.

To learn more on how to use this indicator, visit Stochastic Oscillator.

Once applied, it will show the overbought/oversold area and improve the probability of success.

Trader would now:

Enter long trade after two consecutive RED candles are completed and the Stochastic is above 70 mark.

Enter short trade after two consecutive GREEN candles are completed and the Stochastic is below 30 mark.

To further improve the performance of this awesome day trading strategy, other filers might be used. I would recommend to place stop orders once the setup is in place.

In the long setup showed in the chart below, the trader would place a long stop order few pips above the high o the second Heinkin-Ashi reversal candle.

The same would apply to short setups, trader would place a sell stop order few pips below the low of the second reversal candle.

3.Support and Resistance - Role Reversal Trading Strategy.

To start I needs to assume that you know what is the support and Resistance in Forex trading. If not see few simple definitions and examples below.

Support and Resistance are psychological levels which price has difficulties to break. Many reversals of trend will occur on these levels.

When a certain level is difficult for price to cross upwards – it is called Resistance.

When a certain level is difficult for price to cross downwards – it is called Support.

The harder for price to cross a certain level, the stronger it is and the profitability of our trades will increase. The most basic form of Support and Resistance is horizontal. Many traders watch those levels on every day basis and many orders are often accumulated around support or resistance areas.

It important to mention, support and resistance is NOT an exact price but rather a ZONE. Many novice traders treat the support and resistance as an exact price, which they are not. Trader must think of support and resistance as a ZONE or AREA.

These levels are probably the most important concepts in technical analysis. They are a core of most professional day trading strategies out there.

Role Reversal is a simple and powerful idea of support becoming a resistance (in the downtrend) and the resistance becoming a support (in the uptrend).

Let see how this plays out in the uptrend.

Once the price is making higher highs and higher lows we call it uptrend. Technical trader must assume the price is going to go up forever and only long trades should be considered. Once the uptrend is defined, the lowest strategy to trade is – buy on pullbacks.

As per definition of an uptrend, the price punching through the resistance and pullback before it makes another higher high.

Once the resistance is broken to the upside, it becomes a new support level. Resistance changes its role to support, hence the name “Role Reversal†.

After making a new higher high, the price in uptrend must correct. It is likely to correct to the new support level. This can present an excellent buying opportunity for bulls.

We don’t know where exactly price will resume an uptrend. Risk management must be applied.

Trader must remember to treat support and resistance levels as ZONES rather than exact price.

The same principle applies to downtrends.

If the market is in downtrend, the price will punch through supports making new lower lows. The broken support becomes new resistance and offers opportunity for short positions.

A trader could use other filters to gauge the pullback. Fibonacci retracements are often used by professional traders to measure how deep the price corrects.

A trader can also establish few levels of support or resistance to lower the risk and increase the gain.

I expanded this article for another five strategies.

To learn about another 5 go to DAY TRADING STRATEGIES now!

In the End!

Day trading, and trading in general is not a past-time! Trading is not something that you dip your toes into now and again.

Day trading is hard work, time consuming and frustrating at the best of times! It is no wonder that over 93% of people that try it, lose money and give up!

As Cory Mitchel over at vantage point trading said.

“the excuse doesn’t matter; the cold hard number is that only about 4.5% of traders who start day trading will end up being able to make something of it.â€Â

BUT, by recognizing the difficulty and learning some basic trading strategies you can avoid the pitfalls that most new traders fall into!

The honest truth of the matter is this, most new traders get involved because they see huge profits straight ahead by simply clicking BUY .

Believing they will wake up the next morning a newly minted millionaire! What actually happens goes more like this.

Your friend has just opened a trading account, he claims to have made a hundred dollars in ten minutes, he just sold the EURUSD because the U. S economy is so great right now, it said so on TV!

So you go home, lodge a $1000 into a trading account, SELL the EURUSD at $5/ point.

You wake up the next day and the market has moved against you by 200 points, and your account is wiped out!

Lets look at the facts. There are three main reasons behind the high failure rate of new traders, and you can avoid them easily!

As in the story I told above, trading based on hearsay or some popular narrative will lead you to almost certain doom!

The value of using a tried and tested trading technique is immense, and will save you from loosing your hard earned savings.

By using a day trading strategy, you remove the emotional element from the trading decision.

A trading strategy requires a number of elements to be in place before trading.

So, when those elements are in place, you place the trade.

It is a binary decision rather than an emotional decision. All other actions are off the table, by following a trading technique you avoid the cardinal sin of trading, that is, over trading.

So often new traders place a trade without even placing a stop loss position! An error which can lead to catastrophic losses.

Money management can be as simple as using the 3 / 1000 rule.

That is: never ever ever ever risk more than 3% of your capital on any trade.

And never risk more than 1000th (or as close to) of your capital per point.

Now, I've given you the tools, so get to it, and start trading profitably!

Please let me know, which day trading strategy is your favourite in the comment section below. I will expand of the most popular ones.

A profitable strategy for short term trading!!

2)Then, we are going lower to 1 hour chart. We try now to draw channels or trendlines . Again we are looking the trend. 4 hour and 1 hour should be the same.

3)We are moving forward to 15min chart. Here is the ''game''. We have obtain the short term-intraday trend from the previous timeframes. We are now looking for retracement moves. As we find them we are waiting for a strong candle. In our chart we can see that after a retracement, doesn't matter how big it is, the price go over the EMAs Due to our bearish trend we would place our short positios as soon as a strong bearish candle appears. By the term ''strong'' i mean a candle whose body is bigger than the last bullish candle (the more bullish candles it ''eat'' the better). This is the 1st condition to put a Trade. The second is the strong bearish candle to cross downwards the EMAs. I mean to close below them.

I am waiting your comment.

Thank you for reading.
